CityTalks recap: reconnecting climate and nature in the heart of the city

Future Focus joined the City of Sydney for the first CityTalks event of 2025, where leaders explored how cities can reconnect climate, nature and community. The evening spotlighted Sydney as a climate action leader, with discussion centred on how urban environments can foster deeper relationships with nature and culture.

Speakers called for a narrative shift — from seeing nature as separate, to recognising that we are part of it. This mindset, they argued, is fundamental to how we plan and live in cities. There was both urgency and optimism in the room, with Sustainable Sydney 2030–2050 seen as a bold step forward.

We left energised by ideas of cultural and ecological restoration — from designing nature-led neighbourhoods to centring community and Country in climate solutions. For those working in communications and strategy, the message was clear: changing systems begins with changing stories.
